Despite losing the second leg 3-2, AC Milan beat a resilient Rennes 5-3 on aggregate to go to the Europa League round of 16, where they will face Benfica, another past European champion.
While Rennes’ Benjamin Bourigeaud scored a hat-trick, including two penalties, Milan was never truly in danger of losing their 3-0 advantage from the first leg thanks to goals from Rafael Leao and Luka Jovic.
Benfica also defeated French opposition, as the Portuguese team advanced after winning 2-1 in the first leg last week in Lisbon and drawing 0-0 away to Toulouse.
Later, in Jean-Louis Gasset’s first game in charge since Gennaro Gattuso left, Marseille plays Shakhtar Donetsk. After the first game in Hamburg, the tie is tied at 2-2.
Following a 1-1 tie in the first leg, Roma, the runners-up from the previous season, will play Feyenoord in the Italian city.
Entering the rematch, Sporting Lisbon leads Swiss champions Young Boys 3-1, while Galatasaray leads Sparta Prague 3-2.
On Friday, the draw for the final 16 will take place at the UEFA headquarters in Nyon.
